Comparison of Tread Mill vs Running on Track

By Scott Mogul

Many people wonder which is better or more effective, running on a tread mill vs running on track. The calories burned on tread mill will depend on a number of things, including the speed of the tread mill and the incline. Which form of exercise is best for you will depend on a number of things, including your fitness goals and your personal preferences.

Running on a Tread Mill vs Running on Track

Advantages to running on a tread mill include:

· You can run on the tread mill regardless of the weather outdoors.
· You can adjust the speed of the tread mill to meet your fitness needs and goals.
· You can adjust the incline of the tread mill to meet your fitness needs and goals.
· You can set the tread mill to vary the speed and incline to give variety to your workout and make you burn more calories, as opposed to just running on a flat track.
· Many people put their tread mill where they can see the television, which keeps them from getting bored while running.
· Most tread mills will keep track of how many miles you run and how many calories you are burning, so you don’t have to try to calculate that information yourself.

Advantages to running on a track include:

· If you run on an outdoor track, you get fresh air and sunshine, which is beneficial to your health.
· Of course, if you run on an outdoor track, the weather may interfere with your ability to exercise at times; however, if you run on an indoor track, like at a gym, you can exercise regardless of the weather.
· Some people get bored running in place on a tread mill, but running on a track, particularly outdoors, may be more interesting.
· Tread mills can be expensive, and so can gym memberships, but most high schools have outdoor tracks that you can run on for free in the evenings.
· Some people work harder and burn more calories when they run on a track as opposed to running on a tread mill because they tend to hold on tight to the handlebars on the tread mill, which causes you to work less hard and burn fewer calories.

When deciding between running on a tread mill vs running on track, you’ll need to take into account your personal preferences and your fitness goals. You might get a harder workout if you use a tread mill and set the speed fast enough and the incline steep enough. But will you enjoy it enough to do it regularly? And can you afford to buy a tread mill?

Something else to keep in mind when deciding between running on a tread mill vs running on track is that it doesn’t have to be just one or the other. Some people use a tread mill during bad weather and run outdoors on a track in nice weather.

Calories Burned on Tread Mill

The calories burned on tread mill will depend on a number of factors, including the speed of the treadmill, which you can adjust, and the incline of the tread mill, which you can also adjust. Obviously, the faster the speed and the greater the incline, the more calories you will burn. You can also increase the number of calories burned on tread mill by not leaning on the handlebars. If you need to touch the handlebars for balance, that’s OK, but leaning on them causes you to work less hard and decreases the number of calories burned.

Just to give you a ballpark figure, though, a study conducted by the Medical College of Wisconsin and VA Medical Center in Milwaukee found that the average number of calories burned on tread mill during a 60-minute workout is 785 calories. Compare this to an average of 774 calories burned if you just run on a track for an hour at the pace of 6.7 miles per hour (which is a reasonable pace).

I read this with much interest. I don't run any more as I have not recovered from an accident but I do love walking and even hiking. I have never wanted a treadmill but now I can see the advantages of having one. Thank you for sharing your expertise with us.

Treadmills are dangerous for serious runners because you don't get any headwind, and you easily overheat.

Huh... I didn't know that leaning on the bars reduced the calories burned while on a treadmill...
