How to Find a New Job

By Scott Mogul

In today’s economy, many people want to know how to find a new job and are looking for job search ideas. Yes, you can always check the classified ads in the Sunday newspaper, but you might the options listed to be rather limited. Here are some tips on how to find a new job and some job search ideas that might help you in your quest.

Use the Internet

Many local newspapers put issues online, and you can look for jobs there. Not only can it be more convenient than buying a daily newspaper, but some newspapers list more jobs online than they publish in the print edition of the paper.

There are also a number of job search databases online that you can use to search for jobs. Try putting “job database” into your favorite search engine. You could also add the position you are searching for, like “job database teachers” or “job database engineers.” If you find a job online that you want to apply for, usually you can just email a resume, which is quick and easy.

Some job search websites also allow you to post a resume online for employers to browse. It’s not clear how many employers actually look for resumes online, but it certainly doesn’t hurt to post yours. It only takes a couple of minutes to do it.

Online job search databases will often include information about how to find a new job and some new job search ideas, too, so they can be a very valuable resource to you.

Send Unsolicited Resumes

You can find places that are hiring by looking in the newspaper or looking online. However, many jobs never get advertised. Positions might get filled from within the company, or other employees might recommend people they know for the job. Or, a job might be coming open in the future, but the company might not be advertising it yet for some reason.

If there is a company you think you would like to work for, you can send them a resume even if they aren’t advertising any job openings at the present moment. Call first to find out who is in charge of hiring so you can address your resume to the right person. Explain in your cover letter what kind of position you are looking for and why you are interested in working for that company. Ask them to please keep your resume on file and think of you if a position becomes available. Many companies will do just that.

Networking

When you talk about how to find a new job, you always hear about networking. But what exactly is networking? It’s basically just developing a network of people that know you’re looking for a job and can pass on information that might help you. They can tell you if they know of any openings, and if they know anyone who is looking to hire someone, they can mention your name.

All you have to do is, tell everyone you know that you are looking for a job. Also, create opportunities to meet people in your field. For instance, you can join a professional association or other organization of people in your field. Take copies of your resume to meetings in case you get the chance to pass it on to someone. And ask for colleagues for job search ideas.

The bottom line is, when wondering how to find a new job, you need to be creative and look beyond the Sunday paper. Try out these job search ideas, and happy hunting!
