How to Treat Facial Psoriasis

By Scott Mogul

Facial psoriasis affects about 46% of all individuals with psoriasis. On the face psoriasis looks much like psoriasis on any other part of the body. It generally consists of a scaly rash and is itchy and irritated. In individuals with facial psoriasis, the rash is generally found above the upper lip, around the forehead and eyebrows, and near the hairline, although this can of course vary from person to person.

Diagnosing Face Psoriasis

Psoriasis, whether on the face or elsewhere on the body, is usually diagnosed after a doctor examines the rash and talks to you about your symptoms. If there is a question about the diagnosis, a skin biopsy can be done to rule out other skin diseases. Most of the time a biopsy is not necessary, however. You can see your internist if you think you might have psoriasis, but you might want to see a dermatologist instead. A dermatologist will have more experience diagnosing and treating the condition.

Preventing Flare-ups of Facial Psoriasis

There is no cure for psoriasis, but there is treatment, which we will talk about in just a moment. However, symptoms of psoriasis may come and go, and there are some things that can be done to help prevent flare-ups.

Illness can exacerbate psoriasis, so taking steps to remain healthy can help. For instance, eat a healthful diet, get plenty of sleep, stay away from people who are ill if you can, and get a flu shot each fall.

Stress can also exacerbate psoriasis, so taking steps to manage stress can help. Again, get plenty of sleep and eat right. Regular exercise will help with stress and with overall health, as well. If you are dealing with a lot of stress in your life, consider seeing a therapist to help you cope with it all.

For some people with face psoriasis, certain foods seem to trigger flare-ups, but these trigger foods can vary widely from person to person. Some experts recommend keeping a food diary for a while so you can identify any foods that lead to flare-ups in yourself.

Some people with face psoriasis say that swimming in a chlorinated swimming pool aggravates their condition. Others report that it actually helps their condition. You could try it and see how it affects you.

Treating Face Psoriasis

Treating facial psoriasis is the same as treating psoriasis anywhere else on the body. There are a number of possible treatments for psoriasis, and the best treatment for you will depend on the type of psoriasis you have (there is more than one kind) and the severity of the condition.

Topical medications are available both over-the-counter and by prescription. Prescription topical medications usually contain steroids, which help to reduce inflammation and irritation.

If topical medications don’t do the trick, there are oral or injected medications that may be more effective. Topical medications are usually tried first, though, because they have fewer side effects.

Sometimes phototherapy is effective. This involves exposing the affected skin to an ultraviolet light source.

Laser treatments can be used to treat some types of psoriasis. Basically, they are used to cut off the blood supply to the flaky, scaly skin. These treatments can be effective, but can also be expensive and can be temporarily irritating to the skin.

There are some natural treatments for psoriasis that are available over-the-counter and some people prefer these because there is less risk of harmful side effects. Some natural treatments will be more effective than others, though, so do your research carefully if you are interested in trying natural treatments.

If you have facial psoriasis, you should consult with a dermatologist about the best treatment for your condition. You may need to try more than one treatment before you get good results.
