Tips for Dressing to Find a Job

By Scott Mogul

If you are job hunting, you need to know about dressing to find a job. Having appropriate dress for a job interview can make all the difference, since your appearance will make the first impression on the interviewer.

The appropriate dress for a job interview depends in part on the type of job you’re looking for. If want to work at McDonald’s, you are going to dress differently than you will dress if you want to sell cars or be a nurse or manage stock portfolios. In general, when dressing to find a job, you should try to dress one step up from what you think you will be expected to wear for work. For instance, if you will be able to wear jeans and tee shirts on the job, wear khakis and a polo shirt to the interview. If you will be able to wear khakis and a polo shirt to work, wear dress slacks and a button-down shirt with a tie to the interview.

Of course, your clothes should be neat and clean, ironed if necessary. But what specifically should you wear?

Appropriate Dress for a Job Interview

When dressing to find a job, remember the following:

· If you wear slacks, tuck in your shirt and wear a belt. No big funky belt buckles.
· Wear conservative shoes. No open-toed sandals.
· Men should wear a tie, unless you are sure that would be too dressy. If in doubt, wear one.
· Women should wear skirts long enough to allow them to sit comfortably. No mini-skirts.
· Women should not wear low-cut tops.
· Women should wear neutral-colored hose if hose are needed.
· Women should wear minimal makeup and perfume. Men should wear minimal aftershave. You don’t want them to smell you coming.
· Nails should be neatly manicured. Subtle polish, if any.
· Women may carry a purse if desired. Men and woman may carry a briefcase or portfolio, if appropriate.
· Take an ink pen with you in case you need to fill out an application or write something down. Take a copy of your resume in case the interviewer doesn’t have it handy for some reason.

What Not to Wear or Bring to a Job Interview

While we’re talking about dressing to find a job, let’s take a minute to talk about what not to do. Consider the following:

· Don’t chew gum.
· Don’t smoke before you go into an interview. You will smell like cigarettes and it might affect your getting the job.
· Don’t wear large or dangly jewelry. Don’t wear a lot of jewelry. A watch, a wedding ring, and small earrings are good.
· If you have lots of piercings, consider removing some of them. One earring in each ear is OK. More than that might be too much.
· If you have tattoos, cover them if you can.
· Leave your cell phone in the car.
· Leave your ipod at home.
· Don’t take coffee, soda, or snacks with you to an interview.

Other Tips for Dressing to Find a Job

· If you’re not sure about the appropriate dress for an interview, you can visit the place of business the day before your interview to see how the employees are dressed.

· If you’re still not sure about the appropriate dress for an interview, dress up, not down. It’s better to be overdressed than underdressed.

· Get your clothes ready the day before your interview so you have time to make sure everything is ironed and you’re not missing any buttons, etc.
